“Ooh, I’ll be the one who’ll break my heart. I’ll be the one to hold the gun.”

Why Feist?

Feist is proof that quiet doesn’t mean weak. With minimalism as her method, she crafts emotionally complex music that lingers long after the song ends. She doesn’t shout to be heard — she draws you in.

Origin Story

Born Leslie Feist in Nova Scotia, raised in Calgary, she began as a punk guitarist before finding her voice as a solo artist. Early collaborations with Broken Social Scene gave her indie cred, but her solo work built the legacy.

Signature Style

Her music blends indie folk, baroque pop, and soft jazz — but it’s her restraint that defines her. Sparse instrumentation. Introspective lyrics. Unrushed melodies. She makes every note matter.

Beyond the Music

Commercial & Critical Success
The Reminder (2007) went multi-platinum and earned four Grammy noms.

Unexpected Reach
1234 became a viral iPod ad anthem, launching her into global visibility — without compromising her sound.

Collaborator at Heart
Worked with Peaches, Gonzales, Mocky, and others. Always elevating, never dominating.

Visual Direction
Known for artful, often theatrical live performances and music videos with strong aesthetic identity.

Why PD Loves Feist

Feist plays the long game. She teaches the power of subtlety, discipline, and space — values often lost in the noise. Her work invites reflection. She’s not trying to own the room; she’s designing a room worth staying in.

Why MIA?

MIA is chaos with intent. A genre-hacker, visual artist, and political agitator, she’s never been easy to categorize — and that’s the point. Her work doesn’t follow trends; it exposes systems.

Origin Story

Born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam in London, raised in Sri Lanka during civil war, MIA’s upbringing was shaped by displacement, surveillance, and propaganda. She studied visual arts before turning to music, where she fused her background into an unmistakable aesthetic.

Signature Style

Her sound blends hip hop, dancehall, grime, electro, and global street noise. It’s raw, rhythmic, and disruptive. She writes hooks like slogans, and her beats feel like protest chants turned club bangers.

Beyond the Music

Visual Artist First
Designed her own covers, directed videos, and approaches music as a full sensory project.

Political Provocateur
Critiques immigration policy, war, and surveillance capitalism.

Fearless on Stage and Off
Famously flipped the bird during the Super Bowl halftime show — and paid for it.

Filmmaker
Subject of the doc Matangi/Maya/MIA, showing her journey from refugee to icon.

Why PD Loves MIA

She’s a cultural disrupter. MIA blends message and medium with surgical precision — a reminder that art can provoke, educate, and still slap. Intelligence + Awareness? Her entire career is that formula.

“Clean up your rap, your story’s getting dusty. Wash out your mouth, your lies are getting rusty.”

Why Nina?

Nina Simone wasn’t here to entertain — she was here to confront. A classically trained pianist turned uncompromising truth-teller, Nina used her voice as a weapon for justice, art, and change. Her influence cuts deeper than sound.

Origin Story

Born Eunice Waymon in North Carolina, she trained to become the first Black classical concert pianist. After being denied entry to Curtis Institute due to racism, she redirected into bars, playing under a stage name to shield her identity from church circles.

Signature Style

Her sound defies category — a fusion of jazz, gospel, blues, classical, and folk. Her phrasing was deliberate. Her delivery? Uneasy by design. Nina didn’t sing to please — she sang to wake you up.

Beyond the Music

Civil Rights Firebrand
Protest anthems like Mississippi Goddam and To Be Young, Gifted and Black became movement staples.

Fearless Activist
Marched with MLK, challenged norms, and paid the price with censorship and exile.

Exile and Legacy
Lived in Liberia, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. Resurged late in life as younger generations rediscovered her.

Scholar & Rebel
Turned down record deals, demanded artistic control, and refused to be defined.

Why PD Loves Nina

She represents art with teeth. Nina is a model of integrity, range, and force — a reminder that great work often requires great courage. She didn’t bend. She didn’t dilute. She created with purpose, and it changed the world.

Why Rihanna?

Rihanna is more than a pop star — she’s a case study in evolution. From breakout singer to fashion mogul to billionaire CEO, her career defies the industry template. She’s bold, calculated, and always ahead of the curve.

Origin Story

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Barbados, she was discovered at 15 and signed to Def Jam by Jay-Z. Her Caribbean-infused sound caught fire fast, but it was her relentless reinvention that kept her on top.

Signature Style

Early hits blended dancehall, R&B, and pop. Then came the edge: darker themes, fearless visuals, and genre-bending experiments. No two albums sounded alike — by design.

Beyond the Music

Fenty Beauty
Redefined beauty standards with inclusive products. Generated $100M+ in first 40 days.

Savage X Fenty
Disrupted lingerie with bold, body-positive fashion.

Philanthropy
Through the Clara Lionel Foundation, she funds education and emergency relief globally.

National Hero
In 2021, named a National Hero of Barbados.

“Step to me, get burnt like toast.”

Why Missy?

Missy Elliott isn’t just a rapper or a producer — she’s a cultural force. Breaking through in the late ’90s, Missy reinvented what hip hop could look and sound like. Bold visuals, genre-bending production, and infectious hooks made her iconic. She’s a master of the craft and the business.

Origin Story

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Missy’s journey began with hardship. Childhood trauma, poverty, and systemic barriers didn’t stop her. Instead, they shaped a visionary. She linked up with Timbaland early, forming one of music’s most influential creative duos.

Signature Style

Missy fused hip hop, funk, R&B, and futurism into a style that was unpredictable, magnetic, and always fresh. She wrote and produced her own tracks (rare then, rare now), often creating for others — from Aaliyah to Beyoncé.

Beyond the Music

Writer/Producer
Over 100 songs written for other artists.

Fashion & Visuals
Her music videos? Groundbreaking. Think: fish-eye lenses, surreal costumes, CGI in the ‘90s.

Philanthropy
Quietly supports education, women’s shelters, and disaster relief efforts.

Recognition
First female rapper inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2023).

Why PD Loves Missy

She’s a multidimensional powerhouse. Missy’s an artist, executive, futurist — proof that creativity isn’t one lane. Her work inspires us to be weird, smart, stylish, and brave.

Nashid Chroma’s work explores the space between celebrity and anonymity. Using vibrant, saturated colour and symbolic floral and geometric motifs, his portraits examine the tension between the humanity of public figures and their transformation into cultural icons. By blending abstraction with recognizable imagery, Nashid invites viewers to reflect on fame, identity, and the power dynamics between artists, audiences, and celebrity culture. His work ultimately asks whether we connect more with the person depicted or with the artist’s interpretation of them.

Haris is a Canadian-Pakistani visual artist whose path from actuarial science to fine art informs the precision and imagination within his work. After an 18-year career in finance, a visit to Dalí’s crypt reignited his early passion for painting, leading him to learn oil painting techniques and develop what he calls “referential surrealism.” Influenced by his life between East and West, his contemporary compositions blend architectural forms and lush florals into fantastical worlds that reflect his belief in the oneness of humanity, while celebrating beauty, culture, and the strength of femininity.
