Poke the Box is a reminder not to ask for permission. As a manifesto, the book boldly argues that the only real way to succeed is to take initiative. It encourages us to provoke, create a ruckus, experiment, fail, repeat, learn, succeed. If you get knocked down, pick yourself back up and get on with it. Don’t wait for the “thumbs up” – Make moves!

This is a motivational book about staying focused, getting out of your comfort zone and recognizing boundaries. The title is a metaphor for doing things ignorantly and taking initiative. The author coaches you, in a way, to let your ego push you and not be afraid to act like a fool. I would recommend it to any procrastinators.

This book is short, intriguing, and repetitive. In my opinion, Godin successfully drives the points home: don’t resort to thinking inside or outside the box, poke it once in awhile, and don’t be afraid of breaking it or getting it wrong before getting it right. If you’re looking for a book to help light a fire under your butt, this is a good one. An even better one, in my opinion, is ‘Do the work’ by Stephen Pressfield.
