AI at the Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is pushing an ambitious AI agenda for the 2024 Paris Olympics, integrating AI across training, refereeing, and broadcasting. AI is also expected to aid in real-time decision-making for referees and enrich viewer experience with personalized content. Critics raise concerns about fairness, as wealthier nations may gain a competitive edge due to better AI resources. Additionally, the potential bias in AI decision-making and the impact on athletes’ privacy are points of contention.

Apple Intelligence is Delayed
Apple’s new “Apple Intelligence” AI features are hitting a snag and won’t be ready for the initial iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 launch in September 2024. Instead, expect them in updates rolling out later in 2024 or even 2025. These features, designed to summarize notifications and generate content, need more time in the oven for refinement and bug fixes. This delay is a classic example of why companies should avoid over-promising on tech releases.

Toyota & Stanford: Synchronized Driverless Drift
Stanford Engineering and the Toyota Research Institute have developed the first AI-directed, driverless tandem drift team. This ambitious project involves two autonomous vehicles performing synchronized drifting maneuvers, guided solely by AI, GPS, and Wi-Fi. The lead car charts its path without human input, while the chase car mirrors its movements, maintaining a mere 10-inch gap at speeds up to 35 mph. The ultimate goal is to enhance the safety of autonomous driving in urban environments by leveraging the precise control and coordination required for tandem drifting.

Government Cracking Down on AI
U.S. lawmakers have sent a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, requesting greater transparency and government access to the company’s safety standards and employment practices. The letter, signed by Senate Democrats and an independent, questions the allocation of computing resources for AI safety research and seeks information on OpenAI’s data privacy measures and ethical guidelines. The lawmakers emphasize the importance of government oversight in ensuring responsible AI development and use.
